Fishing in Sargent, Texas (10-21 to 10-23)
My brother, Ed, finally came to Texas for some surf fishing and beach camping. I picked him up at IAH around 8:00pm on Thursday. We arrived at Sargent beach around 10:30pm. It was late and we were tired so we pumped up the air mattress and called it a night.
Friday morning we packed up the sleeping gear and strategized over a cup of coffee. The finger mullet were plentiful so we decided to do some flounder fishing. Ed caught a nice one that measured 18.5”. After we ran out of bait we moved to the surf and set out some cut bait. We didn’t have long to wait before we caught a nice bull red. It didn’t fight at all until it started to run out of water.
The fishing was very slow until late in the day when we got a nice run but the line broke almost immediately. There must have been a nick somewhere above the shock leader because there wasn’t that much pressure on the fish. We didn’t have long to wait before another good run. This one stays hooked and Ed fights it down the beach. I was taking a picture and looked up just in time to see the second rod bend over and start screaming. I ran back to the truck, put the camera down, and start fighting that one. We both stay hooked up for a few minutes before Ed’s shark comes into view. I dragged it up on the beach and we traded rods so I could take a picture and release it. The second shark was bigger and much more stubborn but Ed finally beached it. We fished until dark but didn’t get any more action.
On Saturday morning we decided to fish the surf until about 1:00 and then drive back to Houston. Around noon I caught this 29” red. It was tagged and put in the cooler. The summary for 1.5 days of fishing is 1 flounder, 2 reds, and 2 sharks. I posted more pictures at:

Maybe Ed will add something.

I had a great trip to TX and really enjoyed doing some of the stuff I read about on this Blog.
I think Brian and I estimated the sharks at being 3-3.5 and 4-4.5 ft. I was surprised at how hard the second , and bigger, shark fought and how it managed to stay put just off the beach even though I timed my pulls with the waves and kept the pressure on him. He finally turned towards the beach and I hauled him in, but my arms were pretty tired.
Sometime Fri afternoon, Brian warned me not to be seen fishing if the Federales should come down the beach. I hadn't thought about a license till he mentioned it and just found out it would have been about $30 for a non-res two days (as opposed to $5/10 days in VA). I didn't think about that again till Sat when the beach got busy and I happened to be digging around the truck when I noticed a truck pulling up next to Brian's. Sure enough, it was Five-O. The ranger got out and asked if we had caught anything and I said we hadn't caught anything that day, he said that was the story down the beach too. I told him Brian had caught some fish the previous day and he started to get back in his truck. Almost as an afterthought, he asked if we had our licenses and I said I didn't but Brian did and he seemed satisfied and drove off. I made sure not to touch the rods till he left the beach about an hour later.
The wind was almost constant and pretty strong. The wind is almost all you hear on the video I took. It kept the bugs away and we even put on long sleeves in the afternoon. Sat night we slept in the truck since the wind was blowing too much sand around and we didn't want to camp on the hard-pack and risk someone driving into us.
It was really fun spending the time on the coast and I am glad we got some good fish to show for it. I can't wait to come down again.
I am glad that someone is having luck outdoors. This has been a slow and agonizing month for me.
I didn't realize how much brian and ed look alike until just now when I looked at all the other photos and captions at www.brianandmichelle.com. I realized that the second pic isn't brian only when I read the caption saying it was ed
LOL, I had that same thought! Same hat and evertyhing. Daphny must of got the same gift for both of them! :)
Sounds like an excellent trip.
