Blastin' and Castin' in the Texas Outdoors

We havea lot of good times, the road was a drug when we started way back, our wheels rolled on steady, now its forgetting the race to find an open space and leaving that city far behind We’ll be up in the morning before the sun, since anything beats working on the job and everyone knows the early worm gets the fish. The world is your oyster, let the high times carry the low, walk where the sun is shining, lay your burdens down and think to yourself that it sure feels good feeling good again.

I hope they left some for us. I am fairly certain that given my shotgunnery skills I will need more than one shot to blast a green head

The good news is that they are big so you get a larger target than a dove offers. However there is bad news too; They will scare the poo out of you when they flush, they are fast, smart, and tough. I'll be using high brass #5 for the first 2 shots followed by a turkey shell for the FU shot if needed. Looking forward to the weekend.

I PICKED UP A BOX OF HIGH BRASS 3"ERS LOADED WITH #4, ANY IDEA ON WHAT CHOKES ARE IDEAL I WAS SHOOTING DEAD EYE ON DOVES THIS YEAR WITH THE FULLS IN THE O/U, BUT IM QUESTIONING MY ABILITIES WITH THE FULL TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THAT SCARE FACTOR. CANT WAIT TO HEAD THAT DIRECTION, LOOKING FORWARD TO FREEZING MY ASS OFF AND ALL OF US GETTING A BAD CASE OF THE AVIAN STIGMATA.

Z, I LOADED UP 70 ROUNDS FOR THE TRIPLE DEUCE LAST NIGHT IN SIX DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS

20 IMR 3031 22.4 GR, SIERRA 52 HPBT
10 H335 24.1 GR, SIERRA 52 HPBT
10 IMR 3031 22.6 GR, HNDY 55 V-MAX
10 H335 24.6 GR, HNDY 55 V-MAX
10 IMR 24.1 GR, NOSLER 55 BTIP BT
10 H335 24.6 GR, NOSLER 55 BTIP BT

LOOKING FORWARD TO SHOOTING THIS BAD BOY, HOPEFULLY AT SOME CRITTERS BUT TARGETS WILL SUFFICE

I think i'm running a mod in mine, that and improved cylinder seems to be the standard. I hear you on the scare factor, are you planning on running the O/U? If so, you may want to run a mod or imp in the top (first bang) and full in the other. What tophat did you end up putting on the 2^3?

I also have intentions to bring the .270 and the 90gr HP bullets if you are considering setting up the chrono. Otherwise I will leave it here in Bryan.

Does pheasant hunting happen in the early morning / evening like everything else? What about mid-day?

For pheasant I am bringing high brass #4's and a change of underpants.

yea, bring it, we'll set up either down at the range or at my range, they have better benches and a 200yd range. My range has only 1 bench and 100yds, but for pistolas, I do have a setup with about 10 or so steels, no range fee, and an "open mind for open bottles" policy. And if you want a shot longer than 100yds, we can forgo the benches and shoot as far as you think you can, I have not done the mile up here yet, but we do have the room to run it if you are up for it.

And to answer the second part of your two part question, sorta. They will be coming off the roost in the morning and headed off to the fields for breakfast. Then loiter in the fields eatin, periodically heading to water. We will be hunting dairies and feedyards, on the protected side of the lagoons in the uncut weeds for starters, then headin to the ag, hit some CRP corners, walk some piviots and corn stubble. It should be good. Projected temps in the low 50s for sat. this being a warming trend rising up from -1 lastnight (currently 10 at noon). Bring warm clothes, rifles, pistols, shotguns, swords...whatever.

My current projection is that I will have the gun box full, a duffle full of assorted ammunition, some warm clothes, a medium icechest, a certain small yellow icechest and is about it.

I don't need to shoot a mile, I just want to fulfill my curiousity about velocities. So I can do the math and determine just how much energy I am sending into the pigs/deer with each of my favorite loads.

Limiting the amount of gear will allow me to drive the rice rocket and save 50% on the gasoline bill.

z, i ended up talking bass pro into letting me have one of their nikon buckmaster 4.5-14x40mm scopes for $249.00 reg 279.00. This one is a little defferent due to the reticle being just a standard nikoplex rather than the mildot i put on the big boy. didnt seem necessary to put the mildot on the triple deuce seeing that the scope would out shoot the gun.

Makes sense to me, the duce is kinda limited to about 300yds (with awesome shot placement and damn good bullets)for critters and maybe 4-5oo for tiny critters. If you ran 40gn monolithic solids at about 3400fps, you may be able to make a clean head shot on game up to 4 or 5, bit that would be alot like center punching a pin hole at 100yds. Not impossible, but trickey if there is any wind. One way or the other, I love that round, its hard to beat a 5 shot .009" group.

What is it like to have money to spend on things like scopes and guns?

Well, its alot like having money to buy food and shelter. It seems to be a necessity. Dont worry, once you get graduated, you will be the Mr. Moneybags of the lot. And if you are wise, you will tell the wife that you are making 10 to 20 grand less than you actually are and claim that the new gun every 1/2 month or so is some sort of bonus or gift. What is on your grocery list?

NEVER HEARD ABOUT THE 5 SHOT .009 GROUP THERE CHRIS. TELL ME MORE ABOUT IT. THAT SEEMS LIKE ALMOST AN UN MEASURABLE GROUP, MIGHT AS WELL BE A ONE HOLER.

If I had shot it, you know damn good and well you would have heard about it, hell, everyone would have heard about it. But sadly, it was not me, it was Gale McMillen (of McMillen Stocks) in 1973, he shot it with a .222 in compitition with moving backers and has stood as the world record for the last 32 years. But remind me and sometime I'll tell you about the .0089 I shot.

YEAH YOU SHOT THAT ONE THE SAME WEEKEND THAT I SHOT THE .258 GROUP WITH THE 30-30 AT 500 DIDNT YOU? THAT WAS AN AWESOME DAY, PLENTY GOOD WEATHER EXCEPT FOR THE SNOW AND 20 MPH CROSS WIND. BUT THE TEMP WAS A PLUS AT JUST OVER 90 DEGREES CELCIUS. I COULDNT BELIEVE THAT I WAS ABLE TO SHOOT THAT WEEKEND HAVING JUST HAD MY LIVER REMOVED AND REPLACES WITH A WHISKEY BOTTLE. i THOUGHT FOR SURE I WOULD HAVE BEEN WAY TOO SORE. BUT AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, I DIDNT EVEN NOTICE THE PAIN AS MY RIGHT EYE WAS THROBBING FROM THE BATTERY ACID THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED FOR HYPOGLYCEMIA. BUT YEAH YOU SHOULD TELL US ABOUT THE .0089 AS I DONT REMEMBER IT ALL SINCE THE GOVERNMENT ERASED MY MEMORY IN 1964.

CANT WAIT

Did I say .0089? I meant .00089. And it was on a live target back in the Regan years when I was reloading for the Contra. You probably wont find it in the record books because I was using 5 different guns and there is no catagory for accuracy based on simultaneous fire from multiple caliber multiple type (rifle and pistol)accuracy on a live target from an airborne platform in adverse (ie non-declaired war) conditions at night over distances greater than 1500m. But if there was...
