If you had $200?
What scope would you order for your birthday to ride on top of a .270?
I can't find Nikon Buckmaster a 4-12x40mm for less than $265 (Lifetime Warranty)
Leupold VXII nothing new under $300
Swift Premier 4-12x40mm is $144 but no warranty
I guess I will just keep checking the used glass department if ya'll can't find any better deals than me.

Dang near got myself talked into a burris fullfieldII 3-9x40mmm
Would like to get something for $150 and then spend $50 on new trigger components (Timney)to get an adjustable trigger for Ruger Model77 MarkII.
Woody will probably chime in on the prowess of the Nikon. I have not owned one. You know my theory on scopes, I believe they should be the most expensive part of the system. But of those you have listed, I'd choose the VX2, but that may require throwing a few more $ in the hat. I have been very impressed with Burris, owned 2, shot many more, but you did not mention the $. I dont know much about the Swift. Am I to assume the Simmons has gone for a ride on the 10/22? Has it become a killin machine yet?
As far as I can find with lifetime warranties:
Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40mm $209
Nikon Buckmaster 4-12x40 $279
Burris Fullfield 3-9x40mm $179
Leupold VXII 3-9x40 $299
Leupold VXII 4-12x40 $399
Leupold VXIII 3-10x40 $399**
Weaver Grandslam 3-10x40 $249
Weaver Grandslam 4.5-14x40 $329
I would love to spend big bucks on some lovely piece of glass but I just can't swing it.
The 10/22 has stollen the little simmons scope that used to ride on top of the 22Mag. My hunch is that it may lose that in favor of an old fashioned Williams peep sight with a fiber optic front beed.
The Simmons has been earning itself an ejection from the gun cabinet ever since hunting season when I couldn't see anything at dusk at any but the lowest of settings.
What is your take on rifle trigger manufacturers?
If I were to set them up, I'd probably put some high mount see through (I think I gave you some, or atleast meant to) on the .22 mag, then the 10/22 would run with the Simmons as it becomes a general purpose truck gun, capable of birds and critters with in 100yds of the truck. Then run with the Nikon Buckmaster 4-12x40 or the Burris for the .270. Just save up a few $ for the additional 79. I like more than 9 power if I can get it, but definately, on a hunting rifle, I like a low (3 or 4X) for scaning, running shots, and low light. I do see the advantage of the open sights for the 10/22 as a truck gun, wont loose zero on the roughest of roads. I guess I have just gotten used to scoped rifles.
As for the trigger mfg, they are good, and $50 is a good price, I just checked Natchez catalog, and they want $75 or so. They make good stuff, I have one of their triggers on my 77/22 Hornet...crisp.
As far as low light glass, you are gonna have to spend big $ to get that extra 1/2 hour. Objective diam divided by power = exit pupil diam. Larger is better, big objective is not as good as big tube, but a 30mm tube will cost more.
Takes money to play the game. Get the best you can afford and next year when you are throwing stacks of $50s in the fire for kindling, peal a few off the top each time and go buy yourself a Nightforce.
I noticed you had no comment to my last on 2 the hard way.
Champion has a 'blowout' sale price of $200 even on Weaver Grandslam 3-9x40.
Only problem is that my gun is stainless and a black scope would be a bit unseemly on top.
Natchez (thanx Woody) has Nikon buckmaster 4-12x40 for $259 (in nickel finish to match my stainless deer/pig slayer no less) only problem is they are currently out of stock...waiting patiently
Is this something where the wife said she was gonna get you a birthday killing device and said she had a pair of Benjamins to set down? Or is this some form of self imposed limit?
you did send me some tall look through style scope rings. They didn't fit on the Marlin 22MAG
They are currently in between my my old simmons 3-9*22mm (stolen off of 22Mag) and my new ruger10/22
However, I am not really happy with them, They totally obscure the rear blade sight so in order to hit what you want you have to make the front bead just dissappear below the bottom of the look through hole. and because it sets the scope up so high it is being a bitch to get sighted in. If target is too close bullets are low by a bunch, too far, bullets are too low. I now better understand why you want your scope to ride as close to the line of fire as possible.
$200 is what we can realistically spend on frivilous things associated with my birthday. But if another $50 gets me something that much better I will wait and get what I really want.
Unless someone wants to sell me a VXII on the cheap I am going with the Nikon
Any gun shows comming to the B/CS area any time soon? That may be a viable option. Otherwise I'd defer to Woods experience on that 4x12. One way or the other, I hope to see the results splttered across this page soon. What is the target date on pickin up the new tophat? You dont have to wait till your actual birthday do you?
My wife is a HUGE believer in no receiving of your gifts until the birthday/holiday
Champion also had a used 4-12x40mm only labeled as a Weaver, no model number that I could discern. They had it tagged $100 any ideas? Might look good on top of a .22
Just had a gunshow while I was out of town in Michigan
I read over your blog, and i found it inquisitive, you may find My Blog interesting. My blog is just about my day to day life, as a park ranger. So please Click Here To Read My Blog

Yea, I'd drop that thing atop the .22 mag, hell, it would fit nicely on the 10/22 for that matter. No sense throwing big money at a scope for a low recoiler.
from now on I think I will only buy blued steel rifles just to make the scope shopping easier.
Most lines of premium optics now make scopes built out of titanium instead of aluminum but just looking at them hurts my pocket book
Though I do not own a stainless that is still stainless, the advantages of them are pretty obvious. I may end up getting one for the purpose of a designated truck/mud gun. As it is, I dont clean my guns 1/8th as much as most people do. If I had a SS, I'd probably never clean it. How often do you clean yours Steve?
I probably clean each gun once every three months plus any time I knowingly slime one I give it some TLC when I get home
Yea, I guess I do give em a good goin over if I have been huntin in the rain, unless it's a shot gun, then they get it once a year, mid August, weather they need it or not. Pistols generally get the treatment about a month after they begin to jam. I like to practice with a jamming pistol for these worst case senerios. Clearing jams on the fly is good "what if" practice. Rifles get shined about every 500 rounds, which is when accuracy begins to suffer. With the exception of the .22, which may get worked over about every 5,000-10,000. Of course, all this goes out the window when I get into that "I'm bored and all my wood working crap is in storage, maybe I'll adjust a perfectly good trigger" frame of mind. Then I'll clean one or 7.
You clean your shotgun? I have never heard of such a thing
Guilty, I think it is more of a "setting around making leaders before a coast trip, even though you have 20 built and just sitting in the box, filling your time before you can actually go" type of thing. Night before dove season cleaning is as much a tradition for me as saving up a tiny piece of deer strap to cook the night before bow season kicks off.
